THE MALTESE ISLANDS

About

Perched in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, Malta is a stunning archipelago that sits neatly, just south of Sicily and just shy of Tunisia to the north. This nation of islands is a much sought-after sun and sea destination, but there’s more to the island than its gorgeous beaches and long hot summers.

In fact, if you really want to make the most of your stay in Malta, many would argue that October and May is the best time to visit – so you’re in luck! Outside of the hot summer, the streets aren’t chock-a-block with noisy crowds and traffic, and the mild temperatures mean you can spend long hours strolling through the streets of old towns without having to seek refuge from the heat and crowds. If you’re a beach lover, you can still go for a dip in the sea on a beautiful day – you might even have the whole beach to yourself!

What we love about Malta is that it’s very diverse. Without reeling off a complete history, the islands have become crossroads of culture over thousands of years, which makes them very special.

Just like any other Mediterranean country, Malta is blessed with a climate that yields a variety of crops throughout the year. Many local dishes are prepared using fresh seasonal produce, including seafood, rabbit and quail. For authentic Maltese cooking look for small, family-run restaurants in traditional towns.

Stunning architecture, picturesque bays, quaint townhouses, winding streets and flamboyant celebrations – there’s always something to catch your photographic eye. Make sure you've always got your camera handy as the island is full of surprises and eccentric characters.

And remember, there's never a dull moment on the island. Cultural events, concerts, pyro shows and themed festivals take place throughout the year. It's worth seeing what events are on around our wedding date and don’t forget that Valletta is the European Capital of Culture in 2018.
